We have reached the time of year when the yearling sales have started. I attended the start of the sales at Doncaster last week and felt that there seemed to be some very good value for money yearlings, compared to previous years.

Not only are the yearlings cheaper this year but also there is the added incentive of the new bonus schemes put up by the Vendors:

·        The Racing Post Yearling Bonus Scheme is a new initiative whereby some 4000 yearlings being offered for sale this autumn will be eligible to pick up an additional £10,000 bonus with no deductions, in addition to prize money, on the occasion of their maiden race win. Vendors are putting up the lion’s share of the prize fund in this instance by paying £500 per yearling to make them eligible. To maintain eligibility the owner is only required to add an additional £250 which has to be paid before 15 December 2009.

·        The pure fact that 98% of yearlings catalogued in Britain and Ireland are eligible for the bonuses means that they will be won by horses of all types bought at all levels of the market.

·        More than 150 (possibly as many as 180) £10,000 bonuses will be paid out in Britain alone giving bonus winning owners the opportunity to cover a significant portion of their training fees in one go. The bonuses will be spread throughout the turf season, covering selected two year old maiden races of all types run on turf and all-weather over all distances. Ten per cent of the bonuses will be allocated to three year old maiden races run during the first three months of the turf season, again on turf or all-weather, in 2010.

Tattersall’s have put even greater incentives on with the new 8 sales races being held next year & the following year totalling £1,750,000 in prize money

With prize-money levels as they are, the chances of earning a fair return on your costs have been significantly increased.

If you are interested it would be a great help to let me know at what level you are prepared to invest i.e. how much?    Full horse, 50%, 25% or 10% share.
